Musings on how to live passionately and unconstrained

Welcome to asavageforpassion.com

Leaning in to Longing

I used to think of longing as yearning unmet, which usually brought forth disappointment.  Why waste time longing for something if the result is disappointment?  How awful!  But perhaps the stirrings of the heart whisper secrets worth treasuring...perhaps my longings hold the essence of who I am and what is my life purpose.  I am choosing a new path - to cherish my longings as a lifestyle.  I am choosing to be grateful that I am alive, living with a passionate heart.  These feelings are the starting point for me.  Acknowledging my yearnings enables me to live an intentional life, forging my direction from this point of visceral feeling.  What do I want?

I want to honor my feelings.  To embrace my passion.  To herald gratitude for the highs and the lows in life, because they are the gateways to my soul.  I say yes to longing and yes to living - I will listen to my soul's whispers and thereby uncage my heart.

Invitation

Oh do you have time

to linger

for just a little while

out of your busy

and very important day

for the goldfinches

that have gathered

in a field of thistles

for a musical battle,

to see who can sing

the highest note,

or the lowest,

or the most expressive of mirth,

or the most tender?

Their strong, blunt beaks

drink the air

as they strive

melodiously

not for your sake

and not for mine

and not for the sake of winning

but for sheer delight and gratitude –

believe us, they say,

it is a serious thing

just to be alive

on this fresh morning

in the broken world.

I beg of you,

do not walk by

without pausing

to attend to this

rather ridiculous performance.

It could mean something.

It could mean everything.

It could be what Rilke meant, when he wrote:

You must change your life.
